The application process

The School of Medicine uses the American Medical College Application Service, or AMCAS. The application is fully electronic and can be accessed through the aamc.org Web site. Application may be made after June 1, but no later than Nov. 1 for admission the following academic year. Students who demonstrate financial need may qualify for an AMCAS application fee waiver.

The committee on admissions includes faculty, alumni and medical students. Strong preference is given to Missouri residents. A very limited number of positions is available for nonresidents.

Because of our responsibilities to the citizens of Missouri as a state-sponsored public institution, overwhelming preference is given to those applications submitted by Missouri residents. Residents of geographically-contiguous states are also encouraged to submit applications if they have particularly strong credentials. Individuals residing in all other states are still eligible for admission, but their applications are unlikely to be successful unless the Admissions Committee finds some compelling reason to make an exception. Examples of such compelling reasons include exceptionally strong academic credentials, strong ties to the state of Missouri, and/or personal characteristics, backgrounds and experiences adding uncommon and desirable diversity to an entering class.

About 300 applicants are invited for interviews. Committee members consider academic qualifications as well as nonacademic attributes such as maturity, integrity, motivation, altruism and leadership when deciding whom to admit.

To be considered for admission, applicants should:

  • Complete or be in the process of completing all required coursework.
  • Take the MCAT examination by August of the application year.
  • Complete an AMCAS application and file it and all supporting documents with AMCAS by November 1 of the application year.
  • Provide MU School of Medicine with all required documents to complete the file by January 15 of the application year.

Interviews are conducted from October through February, and are awarded to applicants whose files indicate ability to meet the academic rigors of medical school as well as personal traits and motivation comparable to those of successful physicians. Notification of admission status is sent to all applicants by March 15. Admitted students would begin medical school course work the following August.
