Federal

With one exception, there are no major federal scholarship or grant programs for medical students that do not require service commitments. The lone exception is the Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students discussed below.

Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS): These are federal need-based scholarships based on exceptional financial need as determined by parents' income and assets, even if the applicant is an independent student. The applicant must come from a disadvantaged background, based upon family income or environment. The amount and number of awards is based on the allocation from the federal government. The 2005-2006 allocation was $51,789.
