- Second year
Grades are honors, satisfactory or unsatisfactory
- Third and fourth years
Grades are honors, letters of commendation, satisfactory or unsatisfactory
During the first two years, evaluation takes place during the ninth week of the block. There are no mid-block exams or quizzes. Problem-solving skills are tested by responses to clinical vignettes. Traditional knowledge exams similar to the licensing exam are given. Testing for the introduction to patient care component may be knowledge- or skills-based or both. Students receive two grades: one for problem-based learning and one for introduction to patient care. Examinations are unsupervised.
During the third and fourth years, evaluation varies by department. The process may involve observation, skills tests, knowledge and standardized exams.
Students are required to take the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam Step 1 at the end of the second year and pass it before beginning the fourth year. The U.S. Medical Licensing Exam Step 2CS and Step 2CK are required for graduation.
