STUDENT INFORMATION |
Biochemistry» Biochemistry Website» Course Information Revolutionary changes are occurring in our understanding of life processes and in our ability to modify them. The synthesis of biology, chemistry and genetics from which biochemistry takes its origins is relatively new to modern science. Its vigor far surpasses that of most other fields because bright and energetic students continue to be fascinated by the opportunities to seek new knowledge, to help develop the tools with which to probe life's secrets and to try to use that knowledge and those tools to improve human lives. In the Department of Biochemistry, students and faculty members work side by side exploring challenging problems, using modern scientific approaches and techniques. The department is affiliated with both MU's School of Medicine and College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. It provides a unique interdisciplinary environment in which to study the biochemistry of humans, plants, animals, fungi and bacteria. Numerous opportunities exist for students to take advantage of varied research programs through projects supported by the department, the medical school summer fellowship program and research grants. Biochemistry faculty members participate as tutors in the medical school curriculum and serve as an important resource for advancing the practice of medicine through the application of biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology. The department offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, including a joint MD and PhD degree. |
