- Surgery Clerkship
A required surgical rotation of eight weeks is offered to students throughout the third year. Emphasis is placed upon the principles of diagnosis and treatment of common surgical disorders. Each student has a faculty mentor-adviser. Students are assigned patients from all surgical specialties. They participate in preoperative examination and evaluation, assist in surgical procedures and follow postoperative management. Student call is supervised by surgical residents. Faculty discussion sessions cover objectives in required textbooks. - Required Clinical Externships
A selection of required four-week surgical externships is offered to students who have completed the first block of the curriculum. These externships provide graded responsibility to prepare students for residency. - Clinical Electives
Each of the surgical divisions offers electives in clinical and investigational surgery. These electives offer students an opportunity to obtain an in-depth experience with close supervision.
