- Internal Medicine Clerkship
Students spend eight weeks on the internal medicine inpatient services at University Hospital and Truman Veterans Hospital. Under the supervision of faculty and house officers, students are involved in comprehensive care of adult patients with acute and chronic illnesses. Clerkship's teaching emphasizes the principles of differential diagnosis, problem solving and integration of basic science information into the art of patient care. The clerkship also strives to further develop students' clinical skills in medical interviewing and physical examination, which are introduced in the introduction to patient care courses offered in the first and second years of medical school.
- Elective Medicine
Upon completion of the eight-week third-year internal medicine clerkship, students are provided with a wide variety of clinical elective programs. Elective and free time may be spent in any of several areas: cardiology, critical care, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, hematology and medical oncology, immunology and rheumatology, infectious diseases, nephrology and pulmonary medicine. In addition, extensive elective opportunities are available in the Department of Internal Medicine for experiences in research. The director of each respective division should be contacted for details about available opportunities.
- P Postgraduate Instruction
A fully accredited internal medicine residency program for three or more years is offered by the department. Fellowships in all major subspecialty areas are available after completion of residency.
