Information for applicants
The purpose of the School of Medicine Summer Fellowship program is to support students
in full time mentored research under the direction of a member of the faculty. Students
who are currently M-1s, incoming M-1s in Fall, 2009, and Bryant or Conley Scholars
in their junior year of undergraduate education are encouraged to apply. The application
should be prepared by both the applicant and his/her sponsor. A faculty sponsor
must sign the application to indicate a commitment to providing guidance, facilities
and supplies, as well as acceptance of responsibility for the quality of the student’s
research experience.
The School of Medicine Summer Fellowship Program is coordinated by the Research
Council and the Research Deanship of the University of Missouri School of Medicine.
Fellowships are subject to the availability of funds and are awarded following review
by the Research Deans and the Research Council. Previous research experience is
not required. Applications must be received by Friday, March 20, 2009.
Applications will be reviewed for merit by the School of Medicine Research
Council. Selected students should expect to spend 8 weeks of research working full
time on their projects with their faculty sponsor. The planned starting and ending
dates of the project should be indicated on the application form. Stipends of $2,100
will be paid. At the end of the project, the student and sponsor will be responsible
for submitting reports summarizing the scientific and educational progress made
with fellowship support. Fellowship recipients are required to present their work
at the School of Medicine’s Annual Research Day scheduled in November, 2009.
A list of faculty members who have submitted projects is shown for your consideration.
Interested students should contact the faculty members directly in order to discuss
in detail the specifics of the project, their particular qualifications and any
specific arrangements regarding the scheduling of the project. If the student and
sponsor agree that participation in the project would be mutually beneficial, an
application for a School of Medicine Summer Fellowship should be jointly completed
by the student and the sponsor. It is suggested that discussions with prospective
sponsors and submission of applications take place as promptly as possible. Students
and their sponsors will be notified of the results of their application by Friday,
April 17, 2009.
