Summary
The Office of Clinical Effectiveness (OCE) is responsible for facilitating improvement in the quality of health care throughout University of Missouri HealthCare. We are engaged in a variety of clinical projects focused on patient safety and quality improvement. During the summer of 2009, we are seeking a motivated, inspired student to join our team. Areas in which the student might work could include:- Work with OCE staff and members of the UHC Glycemic Control Committee to evaluate current practices regarding glycemic management in diabetic patients. Particular focus might involve assessment of the effectiveness of the subcutaneous insulin protocol used for inpatients, as well as refinement of this protocol. At the end of the project, the student will be prepared to recommend changes to improve the safety of patients on insulin.
- Work with OCE staff and staff in procedural/surgical areas to identify current practices with use of the “surgical checklist” recommended for optimal patient safety. Particular focus might involve effective use of the “time out,” or exploration of barriers to the effective use of the surgical checklist. At the end of the project, the student will be prepared to recommend changes to improve the safety of patients undergoing procedures.
- Work with OCE staff in an area of the student’s particular interest or expertise, with engagement of key UHC staff in exploring current practices and opportunities for improving the care we deliver.
