Summary

This is a project to determine if physicians are appropriately diagnosing and treating PID in the outpatient setting at University of Missouri Hospitals and Clinics. If the data shows frequent misdiagnosis or inappropriate/inadequate treatment, the student would be involved in developing a Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG).

Student involvement would include:

  1. Reviewing diagnostic criteria for PID
  2. Reviewing the literature and known resource documents for recommended treatment options
  3. Performing a retrospective chart review of all cases of PID diagnosed in the previous year at:
    1. University Hospital
    a. Emergency Department
    b. Urgent Care Center
    c. Adolescent Clinic

    2. Columbia Regional Hospital
    a. Emergency Department
  4. Compiling pertinent data into a report
  5. Developing the CPG if indicated
  6. Consider flu project 1 year after instituting the CPG to see if there is an improvement in the management of PID in the outpatient setting. If interested, the student may also participate in the other adolescent division projects with Dr. Tosh and Dr. Robinson.
