Summary

Use of herbal products by individuals can compromise the safety and efficacy of medicines as a result of induction of p450 enzymes. In the developing world, widespread use of traditional medicines involving botanicals is likely to accompany the use of antiretrovirals, anti-tubercular Rx and antimalarials, and engender resistance. There is great need for simple, inexpensive diagnostic devices to detect p450 induction, that can be used by the public. A medical student can assist in the development of such devices.
