BK virus (BKV) infection is asymptomatic in most humans unless the immune system is compromised, and then the virus can cause Polyomavirus Assocated Nephropathy (PVAN), that leads to loss of kidney function. Approximately 5% of allografts fail because of PVAN in some medical centers. Studies of the state of the BKV genome in allografts is needed to understand the basis of reactivation. A medical student can assist in the molecular detection of these genomes.
