Dong Xu, PhD
Chairman and Dowell Professor of Computer Science, Co-Investigator MU-iCATS

Dong Xu, PhD, who reports to the Senior Associate Director for Informatics, is responsible for the development of a strong biomedical informatics support system for clinical and translational researchers. is the James C. Dowell Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science, with appointments in the Christopher S. Bond Life Sciences Center and the Informatics Institute at the University of Missouri.

He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1995, and he completed two years of postdoctoral work at the US National Cancer Institute. He was a Staff Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory until 2003 before joining University of Missouri. Over the past sixteen years, he has conducted research in many areas of computational biology and bioinformatics, including protein structure prediction and analysis, microarray gene expression analysis, computational proteomics, and bioinformatics applications in various species.

His research has resulted in more than 120 scientific papers; he has worked closely with other researchers in the proposed CTSA in the area of epigenetic analysis of cancers. Dr. Xu actively trains interdisciplinary researchers and teaches several interdisciplinary courses in bioinformatics, including Computational Methods in Bioinformatics (CS7010) and Computational Systems Biology (CS8001). He is a recipient of 2001 R&D 100 Award and the 2003 Federal Laboratory Consortium’s Award of Excellence in Technology Transfer. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of Current Protein and Peptide Science and Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
