Esther Thorson, PhD
Professor, Associate Dean and Director of Research Reynolds Journalism Institution, Co-Investigator MU-iCATS Esther Thorson, PhD, who also reports to the Senior Associate Director of Informatics, is responsible for the leadership and administration of effective communication systems that will incorporate new media technology and facilitate interactions among researchers, practitioners, and consumers.
Dr. Thorson is Acting Dean of the School
of Journalism and an international expert on health-related communication); she
will return to her role as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the
Journalism School in June, 2008. Dr. Thorson and Jerry Parker, PhD, are co-editors
of Health Care and Rehabilitation in America: Communication in the New Media Landscape
(Springer, expected 2008); she has also recently published with David Schumann Interactive
Advertising (Second Edition, Erlbaum, 2007).
Dr. Thorson is the author of several
hundred scholarly articles, and she consults regularly with advertising agencies,
advertisers, newspapers, television stations, and health communication organizations.
Her work in articulating the impact of digitization on communication systems from
news to advertising has been presented in Europe, Asia, and throughout the U.S.
Most recently (August, 2007), she presented a plenary session “Rethinking Health
Communication in the New Media Landscape” to a CDC national meeting on health communication
and marketing. Dr. Thorson is the only female fellow of the American Academy of
Advertising and winner of a variety of other awards, including the American Advertising
Federation Distinguished Advertising Education Award (2004) and the Curator’s Award
for Scholarly Excellence from the University of Missouri (2000).
