Robert Ortmann, MD

Einbender Distinguished Professor in Immunology and Rheumatology

Robert Ortmann, MD, became MU’s new director of immunology and rheumatology in June 2005. He previously served as an assistant professor at MU and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Dr. Ortmann’s research involves examining mice that model human autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

His research has received grant support from MU, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Ortmann spent seven years training with the NIH in Bethesda, Md., including five years as a research associate at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infections Diseases and two years as a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Dr. Ortmann also has cared for patients at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital, and his military service includes seven years with the U.S. Public Health Service. He received a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and completed residency training at University Hospitals and the VA medical center in Cleveland.
