New Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Please welcome James P. Stannard, MD, department chair, J. Vernon Luck Sr. Distinguished Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery, and medical director of the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute.

Stannard served as a professor and associate director of orthopaedic surgery, and chief of orthopaedic trauma at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, and operated a successful research program at UAB.

He has served on the Orthopaedic Trauma Association board of directors and the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research review panel for orthopaedic trauma. He also has been a visiting professor and invited lecturer at universities throughout the country. Last year his book “Surgical Treatment of Orthopaedic Trauma,” received the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine from the Association of American Publishers.

A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Stannard completed an internship and residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and a trauma fellowship in Switzerland. During this time, Stannard completed 10 years of active service with the U.S. Army, including service as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He received an Army Commendation Medal and three Meritorious Service Medals before retiring at the rank of major in 1996. He has since served on the faculty at UAB.

Stannard will build on the progress made by Jason Calhoun, MD, former chair of orthopaedic surgery at MU, and interim chair B. Sonny Bal, MD, an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery.
