Community and Resident life
Columbia, Missouri is
a university community of more than 85,000 residents and an additional 28,000 students.
Located in the heart of Missouri on the northern edge of the Ozark Mountains, it
is midway - 120 miles - between Kansas City and St. Louis. Columbia is often ranked
nationally in the top 25 mid-sized towns. It receives this reputation for its low
crime rate, excellent schools, many outdoor activities, and inexpensive cost of
living.

There are numerous hiking and biking trails that run through and around Columbia.
The
Katy Trail, over
200 miles long, runs just south of Columbia. Columbia is also within easy reach
of lakes, rivers and hunting grounds in the Ozark foothills.
Columbia is a community immersed in
University of Missouri tradition. Residents receive a discount on tickets
to football, basketball and other MU sporting events. There are also plenty of opportunities
to get personally involved in sports through MU intramural sports leagues and Columbia
Parks and Recreation ball leagues.
As a university town, Columbia is culturally rich. Columbia is home to many fine
restaurants and wonderful shops. For those who are artistically inclined, there
are several opportunities throughout the year to see area and University plays or
to catch a concert at the university's Hearnes Center or popular Columbia hangout,
the
Blue Note.
Currently, all our resident physicians own their own homes, as the housing market
is very reasonable in Columbia. A new three bedroom/ 2 bathroom home can be purchased
for roughly $130,000 (about $675 per month in mortgage payment). A nice two-bedroom
apartment rents for $500-$700. Houses rent for $600-$900 per month.
