Members of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine provide evaluation and management of all aspects of complicated pregnancies. Maternal fetal medicine services have multidisciplinary support that includes neonatology, genetics, pediatric cardiology and pediatric surgical specialties such as cardiothoracic, urologic, neurosurgical and general surgery. The physicians offer consultation and management of the following conditions.

Fetal medical and surgical disorders:

  • infection, anemia, alloimmune thrombocytopenia (AIP), idiopathic thrombocytopenia (ITP), arrhythmia, hydrops, abnormal growth, twin transfusion syndrome and congenital anomalies

Fetal Diagnosis and Management

  • comprehensive ultrasound, including genetic ultrasound
  • fetal blood sampling and/or transfusion
  • genetic amniocentesis
  • chorionic villous sampling
  • other diagnostic/therapeutic procedures

Prenatal Genetics

  • first trimester screening for fetal aneuploidies
    and anomalies
  • second trimester screening for fetal aneuploidies
    and anomalies
  • genetic counseling

Maternal Obstetrical Issues:

  • incompetent cervix
  • maternal screening for fetal aneuploides and fetal anomalies
  • abruptio placenta
  • amniotic fluid embolism
  • multifetal gestations
  • placenta previa
  • preterm labor/premature ruptures of membranes
  • preeclampsia/eclampsia
  • recurrent pregnancy losses

Maternal Medical and Surgical Disorders

  • advanced maternal age
  • antiphospholipid syndrome
  • cardiovascular and hypertensive disorders
  • connective tissue disorders
  • gastrointestinal disorders
  • hematological disorders
  • infectious disorders
  • neurological disorders
  • pulmonary disorders, including cystic fibrosis
  • renal disorders
  • substance abuses
  • thromboembolism
  • thyroid and other endocrinological disorders
  • malignant diseases

Diabetes-in-Pregnancy Program

  • a multidisciplinary approach to the management of diabetes in pregnancy with dietary therapy, exercise, medications and close fetal assessment.
