| Residency ProgramCurriculum and Rotations
We have a fully accredited, categorical residency program in adult neurology and offer
one
sleep medicine fellowship position. Resident rotations and activities follow
the guidelines and requirements of the American Board of
Psychiatry and
Neurology, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
The training opportunities are provided at the University
of Missouri Hospital and Clinics (UMHC)
and at the Harry S Truman VA Hospital.
PGY1 - Medicine
Residents rotate through various services within the Department of Internal Medicine. The rotations include
psychiatry, nephrology, pulmonary medicine, infectious disease, rheumatology, cardiology and other
medicine sub-specialties. The in-patient rotations are performed at UMHC and VA, and include urgent care and MICU blocks.
PGY2 - Neurology
This year consists of extensive clinical training on the in-patient service at UMHC and VA.
The team consists of neurology residents, rotating residents from other
services (e.g., psychiatry), and attending physicians.
PGY3 and PGY4 - Neurology
This year consists of rotations in neuropathology, neuroopthalmology, pediatric neurology, EEG , EMG,
specialty out-patient clinics
pain, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and research. Extensive time will be spent on in-patient consult
service. Residents have the option to do an away rotation in critical care as an elective
at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.
Benefits and Compensation
Stipends are adjusted annually. For the Academic Year 2008-09 the stipends are as follows:

Application requirements
- The Neurology residency program match is handled through the National
Residency Matching Program (NRMP). All applicants must be registered
with NRMP prior to submitting their application through
ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service).
- Residency applications, recommendation letters, transcripts, etc., will be sent
to our program through ERAS. Applicants may
begin accessing ERAS September 2, 2008.
- Experience in the United States is preferred. This may be in the form of Clinical Training,
Clinical Research,
Externships and Observerships. The University of Missouri-Columbia does not offer externships or
observerships .
- We prefer passing USMLE scores of 85 or above, but we also take into account applicants' prior training and
experience.
- We will consider applicants with immigration status of U.S. citizens,
permanent residents, H-1 visa eligible or J-1
visa eligible candidates. Consideration of an H-1B visa eligible candidate is based on successfully passing
the USMLE step 3
exam no later than January 31st of the same year training is to begin.
- The deadline for submitting applications is December 15 of 2008.
- If you are chosen for an interview, you will contacted by Chris Bethel, the residency coordinator, to schedule
an interview date and get information on making travel arrangements. Applicants should plan for the interview process
to take from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.
- In cooperation with the Department of Medicine, PGY-1 positions in general internal medicine are provided for
continuity of clinical training in medicine and neurology. Separate applications need not be sent to the Department of
Medicine for these positions but it is essential for you to participate in ERAS and NRMP to match.

Columbia is easily accessible. There are international airports in both
St. Louis (STL) and Kansas City (MCI). Shuttle service is available from
both airports to Columbia. There is no rail service to Columbia.

- What would a typical interview day be like?
A typical interview day would consist of brief
interviews with faculty and residents, and a guided tour of the
hospital facilities. Detailed itineraries will be sent prior to your arrival.
