The primary goal of our Dermatology program is to provide excellent clinical
training. Our residents receive a comprehensive educational experience in clinical dermatology,
dermatopathology and dermatologic surgery. We also ensure protected time
for our residents to read and participate in scholarly activities within their
normal "duty hours".
Our residents provide dermatologic care to patients at the University of Missouri Hospitals and Clinics, the University Physicians Medical Building, and the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital. In addition, they have the opportunity to participate in both adult and pediatric telemedicine clinics at the University Physicians Clinic.
The residency program has an active inpatient consultation service and a very close relationship with our primary care colleagues.
Starting in July 2004, the residency program initiated a monthly consult rotation for second and third year residents. For two months a year, one resident is designated to be responsible for the following duties.
- Inpatient consultations at both the VA and University Hospitals.
- Consultations from the Surgery department and urgent care.
- Consultations from all other primary care and specialty clinics.
- All outside phone calls from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In addition, the Consult Resident will maintain one half day clinic for hospital follow-ups and to maintain their continuity patients. This busy consult rotation has been successful in improving our relationship with other specialties and improved dermatologic patient care.
- Second year residents also coordinate dermatopathology conferences and begin their dermatology surgery training on the cutaneous micrographic surgery unit, which consists of a total of four months spaced throughout their second and third year.
- Third year residents handle all University Hospital consultations and share in administrative responsibilities including oversight of medical student education and input into the structure of the curriculum for the upcoming year.

Our residents have a 100% board certification rate.
The Department of Dermatology has maintained an active, accredited residency program since 1967. Graduates of the Residency program are found throughout the world in clinical and academic practices. Although our primary focus is clinical dermatology, we do have an ongoing clinical research program, and fourteen graduates of our residency program are currently involved in full-time academic dematology practices.
