Kansas City began as a trading post in 1821 and is named after the Kansa Indians or Kaws, a tribe that inhabited the area. Today, Kansas City is a metropolitan area with a population of over 1.8 million people. The Kansas City metro area bridges two states and includes 15 counties and 176 cities. Kansas City is a major transportation hub. About 400 flights a day come and go from Kansas City International Airport. KC is one of only five U.S. cities with three intersecting interstate highways (I-70, I-29 and I-35). Kansas City is best known for its steaks, barbecue and jazz and barbecue restaurants and blues and jazz clubs dot the area. Kansas City also offers a wealth of attractions -- wide boulevards, beautiful parks, world class museums, and more than 200 fountains. In addition, visitors can enjoy professional baseball (the Royals), football (the Chiefs) as well as NASCAR racing.
