Fete succeeds Ted Groshong, MD, who is retiring from his leadership role after five years as chair of MU’s Department of Child Health and medical director of Children’s Hospital. Groshong will remain a pediatric nephrologist and associate dean for alumni affairs at MU’s School of Medicine, where he has held many leadership posts since joining the faculty in 1975.
Fete has been with Saint Louis University and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center since 1990. He currently serves as vice chair for clinical affairs, director of the general academic pediatrics division, and interim director of the developmental and behavioral pediatrics division. He has received numerous awards for medical education, and he has held several leadership roles for the Ambulatory Pediatric Association.
“Dr. Fete has a distinguished record as an administrator, an educator and a clinician who cares deeply for his patients,” said William Crist, MD, Hugh E. and Sarah D. Stephenson Dean of the MU School of Medicine. “As a dean who is also a pediatrician, I am pleased to recruit a pediatrician of Dr. Fete’s caliber to lead our Department of Child Health and to help direct the improvements planned for our Children’s Hospital.”
Fete received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1977. He went on to complete a residency and fellowship in ambulatory pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. In 1998, he received a master’s degree in public health from Saint Louis University. Before joining Saint Louis University’s faculty, Fete was a National Health Service Corps medical director in Tooele, Utah, and a pediatrician at Colorado Springs Medical Center.
At MU, Fete will lead the Department of Child Health’s approximately 200 faculty members, residents, fellows and staff members. With more than 50 physicians and scientists, the department provides medical education, research and clinical services in more than 30 pediatric specialties. As medical director of Children’s Hospital, Fete will oversee specialized care provided to children from every county in Missouri and beyond.
Fete will play a leadership role in MU’s new plan to consolidate Children’s Hospital services under one roof at Columbia Regional Hospital. The move, which will include 100 percent private rooms for pediatric patients, is part of MU’s goal to develop over time a women and children’s hospital in mid-Missouri.
“I consider it an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to work with the faculty and staff of the University of Missouri Department of Child Health. They have a long track record of providing superb care to the children of Missouri,” Fete said. “The new women’s and children’s hospital being planned will allow for significant increases in depth and breadth of services in all of our missions: clinical care, education, research and advocacy for the health and welfare of our most precious citizens, our children.”
