National Policy Influencers to Headline Seventh Annual Health Summit
Former Senate Majority Leader and U.S. Surgeon General give keynote addresses on policy and reform
The MU Center for Health Policy will host its Seventh Annual Missouri Health Policy Summit to explore national health care reform and its implications for state policy and public health. Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona, MD, along with other leading experts, will speak during the Oct. 30 event at the Hilton Garden Inn in Columbia, Mo. The summit will begin at 7:15 a.m. with breakfast and registration and conclude with discussion and final remarks at 3:30 p.m.
Daschle, who continues to be a driving force in health care reform, will present the health care reform keynote address. In 2007, he joined former Majority Leaders George Mitchell, Bob Dole, and Howard Baker to form the Bipartisan Policy Center, an organization dedicated to finding common ground on some of the pressing public policy issues of our time.
The luncheon keynote speaker is Darcy Freedman, PhD, assistant professor and Centenary Faculty in Social Disparities in Built Community Environments at the University of South Carolina. Freedman’s research focuses on understanding and redressing health disparities and promoting health equity through efforts aimed at improving access to healthful foods.
Carmona is the final keynote speaker of the day, with his address “The Politics of Health Policy.” As the U.S. Surgeon General from 2002 to 2006, Carmona was committed to prevention as an effective means to improve public health and reduce health care costs, while improving the quality and length of life. He continues this work as president of the nonprofit Canyon Ranch Institute.
Prominent researchers, policy makers and the public converge annually at the summit to examine urgent Missouri health care matters. This year, attendees will analyze the massive health care reform discussion sweeping the nation and how Missouri’s health care system might be affected by it.
Discussion objectives include:
- Classifying the consequences of national health care reform in the state of Missouri
- Comparing and contrasting the possible effects of various health care reform proposals
- Understanding the complex relationship between policy and politics
The conference is open to registered participants. The registration fee is $175 per person. Fees include all conference materials and food.

About the Annual Missouri Health Policy Summit
The Center for Health Policy’s Annual Missouri Health Policy Summit was first envisioned in 2003 as a venue to bring together health policy makers and health care stakeholders in Missouri to discuss important and emerging health and policy issues facing the health care system in Missouri. Since its inception, it has grown to become a bridge between researchers and policy makers, connecting local and state leaders facing health policy challenges with the knowledge, expertise, and resources they need to identify and adequately meet the health policy challenges facing the state and their communities.
