MU Center for Health Ethics Invites Public to Fifth Annual Conference

Former chair of U.S. President’s Council on Bioethics and others to discuss health access, pandemics and more

The University of Missouri Center for Health Ethics will host its fifth annual conference from Oct. 8 to Oct. 10. Titled “Health Care Access and Allocation of Resources,” the 2009 conference will examine a variety of health policy and reform issues, including palliative care and pandemic preparedness.

Edmund Pellegrino, MD, former chair of the U.S. President’s Council on Bioethics, will participate in the conference. He serves as an adjunct professor of medicine and ethics at the MU Center for Health Ethics and is a professor emeritus of medicine and medical ethics at Georgetown University’s Center for Clinical Bioethics.

The conference begins 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the MU Reynolds Alumni and Visitors Center with a keynote address by Daniel Winship, MD, secretary for the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education. A former vice chancellor and professor emeritus of medicine at MU, Winship will present the Edmund D. Pellegrino Lecture in Medicine and Ethics.

“The 2009 conference will address some very timely issues facing our health care community,” said David Fleming, MD, director of the Center for Health Ethics and chair of the internal medicine department at the MU School of Medicine. “We are excited to be able to heighten the awareness of these issues with such a diverse group of nationally and internationally recognized speakers.”

All members of the community are invited to attend the conference, which continues to accept registrants. Programs on Oct. 9 to Oct. 10 will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Convention Center in Columbia. For registration information, please call (573) 882-5661 or e-mail carrk@health.missouri.edu
