White House Panel Features MU School of Medicine Mental Health Expert

Walker-Thoth selected for success with helping communities address substance abuse and related problems


University of Missouri School of Medicine mental health expert Daphne Walker-Thoth spoke at the White House on Dec. 9, 2008, as part of a roundtable discussing innovative partnership models and problem-solving approaches for government, faith-based and community organizations. The invitation-only event brought together 100 philanthropists, government officials and business representatives, as well as faith-based and community leaders from across the country.

Walker-Thoth, also a research associate at the medical school’s Missouri Institute of Mental Health in St. Louis and a founding member of Committed Caring Faith Communities, was one of 12 panel members featured by the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. She said participating in the event was one of the highlights of her career.

“It was a true privilege and an honor to represent Missouri state agencies and community recovery support programs,” Walker-Thoth said. “It is an experience I will always cherish.”

Walker-Thoth was chosen for her hands-on experience in rallying the resources of Missouri’s faith community to address the issues of substance abuse and related problems such as HIV/AIDS and co-occurring mental health disorders. Walker-Thoth wrote the faith-based component of Missouri’s federally funded Access to Recovery program that resulted in the state’s receipt of more than $36 million to increase access to substance abuse treatment services, increase capacity of treatment services and involve the faith community as a provider of recovery support services.
