53rd Annual Medical Alumni Awards

The University of Missouri School of Medicine and its alumni organization will recognize the following award recipients at a reception and dinner on Thursday, March 25, at Norwood Country Club in St. Louis. The 53rd Annual Medical Alumni Awards reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the dinner will begin at 7:30 p.m. To make reservations, please contact Alex Hopkins, manager of alumni affairs, at

The Citation of Merit, the MU School of Medicine’s highest honor, will be presented to Douglas L. Wood, MD, a graduate of the Class of 1977. Professor Wood is medical director of the Quality Academy, chair of the Division of Health Care Policy and Research, a consultant in cardiovascular diseases, and former vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Outstanding Young Physician Awards will be presented to David R. Andes, MD, and Heidi K. Chua, MD. A graduate of the Class of 1992, Dr. Andes is an associate professor of medicine, medical microbiology and immunology, as well as head of the infectious diseases section at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. A graduate of the Class of 1994, Dr. Chua is an assistant professor of surgery and senior associate consultant of colon and rectal surgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Distinguished Service Awards will be presented to Michael L. LeFevre, MD, Janet S. Rader, MD, and Michael T. Railey, MD. A graduate of the Class of 1979, Dr. LeFevre is professor and associate chair of family and community medicine at the MU School of Medicine, as well as a member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. A graduate of the Class of 1983, Dr. Rader is chair and Jack A. & Elaine D. Klieger Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. A graduate of the Class of 1976, Dr. Railey is associate dean for multicultural affairs and associate professor of family and community medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
Honorary Medical Alumni Awards will be presented to Michael C. Hosokawa, EdD, and Sara E. Walker, MD. Dr. Hosokawa is a professor of family and community medicine, former associate dean for curriculum, and a founder of the problem-based learning curriculum and rural track program at the MU School of Medicine. Dr. Walker is a professor emeritus of rheumatology at the MU School of Medicine, senior scientific adviser for the MU Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, and former president of the American College of Physicians.
All award recipients plan to attend the reception and dinner on March 25 in St. Louis. All MU medical school alumni and supporters are invited. Participants may attend both the award reception and dinner for $50. The award activities are held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Missouri State Medical Association.
2010 Physicians Alumni Weekend
Hundreds of physician alumni will gather again at the University of Missouri School of Medicine for the 53rd Annual Physicians Alumni Weekend. Members of the Classes of
1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005 will join other alumni, faculty members and friends on Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23, in Columbia, Mo.
Activities on Oct. 22 will include the scientific program and alumni banquet. On Oct. 23, the homecoming game will feature the MU Tigers vs. Oklahoma. For more information about 2010 homecoming and reunion activities, please call
